How to install Viber on MX Linux – 2023

This is a simple note to install Viber on MX Linux OS. Viber can be used on both your phone and your computer side by side. You will see all the messages you receive on your phone on your computer and you can read and reply to all messages.

Installing Viber for desktop on MX Linux step by step

This process will take you about 5 minutes. Let’s install Viber on MX Linux:

Step 1: Download Viber from here Viber AppImage for Linux. You will need to click on the download option:

Step 2: Save the AppImage to your computer. Since AppImage is an executable file, it can be launched and run immediately after double-clicking on that file.

This is a problem because if you delete this file, Viber will also disappear from your computer, so we will save this file somewhere where it will not be deleted easily.

Create a new folder in the home folder, you can give it any name, for example MyAppImages and save the Viber AppImage file in that folder.

In this folder, you can also store some other AppImage files of other programs, so this folder will be useful in many ways.

Step 3: After saving the AppImage file, we need to configure MX Linux so that it can know where Viber is and add the Viber icon to the other programs we have.

Go to your home folder and find location: ~/.local/share/applications

Folder .local is hidden folder so you need to use keyboard shortcut to see those folders: Ctrl+H.

In “applications” folder create new file with this name: .desktop

In that new file, put the following text (which you will edit to make it work correctly):

[Desktop Entry]
Version=0.13.23
Type=Application
Name=Viber
Comment=Viber application for MX Linux
TryExec=Path/to/AppImage
Exec=Path/to/AppImage
Icon=Path/to/AppImage.icon
Actions=Editor

These three lines are important:

TryExec=Path/to/AppImage

  • Here you have to enter the exact location that leads to the AppImage file you downloaded. If you downloaded the AppImage file and saved it in the MyAppImages folder, you need to enter: /home/USER/MyAppImages/viber.AppImage

Exec=Path/to/AppImage

  • Here, enter the same path that leads to the AppImage file. If you downloaded the AppImage file and saved it in the MyAppImages folder, you need to enter: /home/USER/MyAppImages/viber.AppImage

Icon=Path/to/AppImage.icon

  • Here you have to enter the path that leads to the image that will be used for the icon for the Viber application. Depending on the icon theme you are using, look for whether the theme contains a Viber icon and enter the path that leads to that icon. I entered the path to /home/ivan/.icons/WhiteSur-grey/apps@2x/scalable/viber.svg

Save the file and you can immediately look in the menu and search for the Viber application:

Step 3:

Start Viber and follow the instructions on your computer and phone. You will need to scan the QR code with your phone and confirm the synchronization of Viber on your computer and phone.

After that, you can use Viber on your MX Linux computer without any problems.
